In a very ordinary house, on a very ordinary street in town lives Little Brother. Most of all he wants to have his own dog. Up on the roof, in a small cabin behind the big chimney, lives a gentleman called Karlsson. He is, according to himself, a handsome, wise and fairly fat man in his prime. On his back he has a small propeller and with it he can fly... He decides to land with Little Brother. After that, nothing will be the same. This is the first book about Karlsson on the roof, perhaps Astrid Lindgren's most controversial creation alongside Pippi Longstocking. Ilon Wikland has drawn the classic illustrations. She found the model for Karlsson on the roof in the halls of Paris, where she saw a small, reasonably fat man in a checkered shirt and blue trousers walking with a fruit cart.

    Astrid Lindgren in Norway

The first to bring Astrid Lindgren's books abroad was the publisher Damm & Søn in Oslo, with their Norwegian edition of "Pippi Longstocking" already appearing in 1946. This marked the beginning of a long-standing relationship. Today, most of her books in Norway are published by Cappelen Damm, a publishing house formed through the merger of Cappelen and Damm. Astrid's book adaptations into films also became popular in Norway, as did her famous songs. One of Astrid Lindgren's favorite books was "Hunger" by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun; she often mentioned it as one of her greatest reading experiences.
