"Kerstin and I was Astrid Lindgren's second published book that came out in the same year as Pippi Longstocking, the book that would be the big breakthrough for Astrid Lindgren as a writer. It is about Kerstin and Barbro, a pair of teenage twins, who end up in a smaller mansion in the country. That Astrid Lindgren grew up in the country, that she knew a lot about agriculture and that she loved nature all her life cannot be mistaken. This her second girl's book (the "bonna book" as she herself called it in a letter to her parents) is a tribute to country life and to the beauty of nature. The cover of the first edition of the book was illustrated by Margareta Klingspor. The book was then illustrated by Ulla Sundin-Wickman when it was published in the series "FIB's youth books" in 1954."

    Astrid Lindgren in Norway

The first to bring Astrid Lindgren's books abroad was the publisher Damm & Søn in Oslo, with their Norwegian edition of "Pippi Longstocking" already appearing in 1946. This marked the beginning of a long-standing relationship. Today, most of her books in Norway are published by Cappelen Damm, a publishing house formed through the merger of Cappelen and Damm. Astrid's book adaptations into films also became popular in Norway, as did her famous songs. One of Astrid Lindgren's favorite books was "Hunger" by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun; she often mentioned it as one of her greatest reading experiences.
