"Diaries 1939-1945 - A unique contemporary document by Astrid Lindgren."How is it possible that mankind must suffer such torment, and why is there war?"Astrid Lindgren shaped our childhood. With Pippi Longstocking and Wir Kinder aus Bullerbü, she changed our view of the world. Their stories are about courage, hope, love and resistance. Long before these books were written, she wrote down her thoughts on the darkest chapter of the 20th century: the Second World War. In her diaries she describes how Europe is being poisoned by fascism, racism and violence.Thoughtful and affected, but also with the unmistakable tone, Astrid Lindgren asks important questions in her diaries that are frighteningly topical again today: What is good and what is bad? What to do when xenophobia and racism determine people's thoughts and actions? How can each of us take a stand? In addition to the events of the war, she tells of her family life and the first attempts at writing: In 1944 she gave her daughter the manuscript of Pippi Longstocking for her birthday. The personal contemporary document of a very clever woman who has always had an eye for the big picture."For me it is the most haunting, honest, cruel war book I can imagine."Sonnenseite.de, Rupert Neudeck, October 26, 2015""Astrid Lindgren didn't write them for an audience, but for herself. They are private, they show the worries and fears of those in their early thirties, but also their great political interest and the special perspective of one of the few peaceful islands in Europe during the war: Sweden was able to stay out until the end and was not uninvolved.""Süddeutsche Zeitung, Silke Bigalke, October 24, 2015""The frank language, the subtle irony, the seemingly childishly naive view of the world - in many ways one recognizes the later writer Astrid Lindgren in the diaries.""dpa, Julia Wäschenbach, 09/28/2015""The war diaries are filled with fear, outrage and compassion.""Die Welt, Barbara Möller, September 21, 2015""Together with the publication of the War Diaries now completes a picture of Astrid Lindgren's life that explains her great compassion for children and single-minded obstinacy.""Der Spiegel, Claudia Voigt, September 19, 2015Translators: Angelika Kutsch, Gabriele Haefs"

      Astrid Lindgren in Norway

The first to bring Astrid Lindgren's books abroad was the publisher Damm & Søn in Oslo, with their Norwegian edition of "Pippi Longstocking" already appearing in 1946. This marked the beginning of a long-standing relationship. Today, most of her books in Norway are published by Cappelen Damm, a publishing house formed through the merger of Cappelen and Damm. Astrid's book adaptations into films also became popular in Norway, as did her famous songs. One of Astrid Lindgren's favorite books was "Hunger" by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun; she often mentioned it as one of her greatest reading experiences.
