    Type:Biography
    Author:Kjell Bohlund
    Publisher:Astrid Lindgren Text

For 24 years, Astrid Lindgren was the head of Rabén & Sjögren's children's book publishing house. When she started in 1946, Rabén & Sjögren was a small publisher, on the verge of bankruptcy. After just a few years, it was the leading children's book publisher in the Nordics. She was the first specialized children's book editor and she became one of the most skilled publishers in Swedish publishing history.Astrid Lindgren divided her life between being a writer and a publisher - she wrote her own books in the mornings and worked at the publishing house in the afternoons. She was the publisher for many of the best Swedish children's book authors, e.g. Lennart Hellsing, Åke Holmberg, Edith Unnerstad, Inger & Lasse Sandberg, Hans Peterson and Barbro Lindgren. The dual roles were not straightforward. Although the criticism was rarely voiced, she had to live with suspicion and jealousy for a long time. But she overcame both and when she retired in 1970 she was appreciated and admired like few before her.
